well I have a friend who has "arthritis" and gets 300? vicodin a month for pain. He takes 3 or 4 at a time and washes them down with a couple of beers and then takes more and drinks more....He is addicted to his medication and the longer you take it the more you need to get high. Not get rid of the pain, get the "high" effect.

accidentally taking more than they should or taking it when it's not their drug... it's very common to get addicted to drugs in this society nowadays

They're easy to get and easy to abuse. People don't take them properly .. mix them with alcohol or other medications .. just take them for granted because they're "legal".

Just because you have something that is prescribed for you .. doesn't mean it's not dangerous, you won't have a bad reaction to it .. get addicted to it ... etc.

Ignorance is a big part of it.

Big Pharma is very adept at selling dangerous, untested drugs and then dodging the blame when people die.
Read Gwen Olsen's book "Confessions of an Rx Drug Pusher", it's at amazon.
She started out with her first boss telling her "If you really want to help people, join the Peace Corps. If you want to make a LOT of money, here's where to do it."
She learned how drug companies profile doctors by how willing they are to buy the newest meds and how to wear down the holdbacks. One doctor was a holdback, but she got him to try a new med on his own mother. She died from kidney failure. There's a lot of that happening.
