Are outdated cake mixes and other outdated packaged products safe to use? If so, how old.I was given some items, such as cake, bread brownie, cookie and hamburger helpers, etc. that expired in 2007. Haven't looked at all items yet, but, I am wondering if any of this stuff is safe to make. - Asked by Female, 46-55 |

Expired baking mixes can be dangerous because of potential mold spores contaminating the mixes. Some people have had serious allergic reactions to using old batter mixes that can even be fatal. Can't say how it would affect you if at all but wouldn't think it was worth the risk. 2007 is pretty old now.

You can use most things for up to 3 months AFTER the experation dates on them. (Not milk or milk products) After that, it needs tossed. You sure wouldn't want to use something that is 5 years old.

Hell no, it is iffy a few MONTHS. I don't eat processed foods anymore but when I did I would never eat anything that was more than 2 months past. The MSG and other crap can keep it preserved a little past the expiration date but not a year, or several years, yuck 2007, wth!?

Technically it's still safe. If there is any yeast packets in it, then you need to replace that. Those items are nothing but flour, sugar and pasta, which all keeps for a long time. If there is a chocolate packet with the brownies, it may lose its flavor. The spice packet with the hamburger helper may have solidified some. And with it all you may need to check to see if any mealy bugs have hatched as all flour products have these bugs in them. Nothing in any of what you described goes rancid. It just that it may lose its integrity or flavor when baked.

The answer to your question, in not so longwinded form, is no, don't use it. I posted you a longer answer telling you why.
