I just received a phone call from my daughter's 2nd grade teacher.

Am I wrong to be a bit ticked by the fact that she mispronounced our last name?

Update: November 06, 2009.
For those of you who castigated me: 1. School has been in session since late August, I think enough time has elapsed that she should know our last name. 2. It's a small private school. She has 14 students in her class. 3. I see her everyday, as I drive my kids to school and they insist that I walk them to their classrooms, and she is the classroom when we arrive, and we greet one another -- everyday. So, no, I don't think I'm being unreasonable in expecting her to know how to say our last name.

This is not the first day of school. She should know what it is by now. That means she has been calling your daughter by that same name.

yes, in my opinion getting upset with someone because they mispronounced your name is not necessary. if she didn't know how to say your name correctly, you simply should have told her the correct pronounciation.

the problem is when you tell someone how to say your name and they insist on saying it the improper way after you've informed them. that is just rude.

It depends. Have you spoken with her one on one before? If yes, then she should know how to pronounce your last name. Do you have an extrmely difficult last name??
the important question is did she pronounce your daughters first name properly? And is everything OK???????

You're joking right? People mispronouce my last name on a regular basis. Who cares? Sometimes I correct them and sometimes I don't. Is it really a big deal? You're a bit ticked...seriously? Don't people have bigger things to be ticked about than a mispronounced last name? Sheesh...I don't get it.

Our last name is hard to pronounce so I am used to it. It probably wouldn't phase me. A teacher should probably take the time to learn the pronounciation of her students names though.

well, just think of the fact that she must have,...say 20 to 30 names to remember, first and last on a daily basis, that changes every year! If she could do that with no error, would she be a second grade teacher?....

I guess it depends on your last name. If it's hard, then I could understand. She probably has 25 or 30 kids and is still getting to know them. She also probably calls them all by first names, so last names might take longer to get down. I assume you corrected her. The real test is what happens next time.
In the big picture, this kinda thing is not worth getting worked up over. It's gonna happen. If this is the worst thing that happens to you today, you're having a pretty good day.

You should be celebrating buying a house, not being upset about a mispronounced last name.

I have an unusual first and last name. I have colleagues who have known me for THIRTY years and still mispronounce my name.

I don't let it bother me.
