can a husband legally get a vasectomy without his wife's knowledge?

this came up in conversation last week. a friend of mine said he didn't want to have anymore kids but his wife wants to keep that option open. i said get a vasectomy, my brother did and it was no big deal. he asked if he was "allowed" to do that. LOL well....can he? or is that grounds for a divorce?

My wife had to be there for the initial consultation or the Dr. wouldn't perform the surgery. Not sure what legal grounds are in place but if the wife doesn't agree I'm sure it would cause serious problems.

Yes. It's his body, he can do what he wants. If he wants to do it without her knowledge, that's his right.

It's his body, so it couldn't be illegal any more than the wife tying her tubes would be. It could be a breech of marital trust, which could then lead to divorce, but a person making choices about their own body and reproductive freedom isn't illegal. Marriage doesn't give you ownership over your spouses body.

Now I do think spouses should consider the others feelings on issues of family planning, not doing so can lead to divorce, but now a days people can divorce legally for just not getting along.

yes, its his body and he can get a vasectomy.

and yes, she can use it as grounds for divorce. but these days, you can get grounds for divorce if the other person snores.

Well there is nothing illegal about getting a vasectomy without your wife's consent. With that said it doesn't mean that she won't divorce you as a result of you getting it done. Especially if she wants more children!

The answer is yes..it is his body, not his wife's. Slavery has been outlawed for a long time as I remember.
Grounds for Divorce....maybe. A case could be made for Mental Cruelty or any of another myriad of legal reasons. I am sure a good lawyer (oxymoron) could make a mountain out of this or some other molehill if it padded the fees he was charging

its not illegal and true it is his body and he has every right, but it would be out of love and respect to atleast discuss his dission with his wife.
