If the dirt is still wet, allow them to dry.  Then vacuum up as much of the dirt as possible.  Mix one tablespoon of hand diwhwashing liquid with 2 cups of warm water.  With a clean white, sponge the soiled carpet with the cleaning solution and blot until the liquid is absorbed.  If the dirt stains remain, sponge the area again.  Then sponge with cold water and blot dry.

If your carpet is very dingy, you may want to rent a carpet cleaning machine or have a professional carpet cleaning service come in and clean your carpets entirely.  When you carpets ares soiled with other stains, the Good Housekeeping Stain Buster has tips to remove them.

To keep the dirt outdorrs, keep extra slippers in a basket near the door to encourage family members to remove their shoes when entering.  Also, keep a sweeper in nearby closet to collect dirt before it gets ground into the carpet.

Carpet stains are hard to get rid of. But if you seen the dirt straight away esp if its still wet or damp the easier for you to take it off...carpet stain remover is fine or if you ran out of it...a cloth dipped in warm water with mild soap will do...smudge it in the stained area and after than rinse it with another clean cloth with warm water on it the dubbed it with a dry cloth...be sure you will not step on it while its drying otherwise it will stain more!
